Birthmark Removal
Birthmarks are blemishes on the skin that are noticeable at birth, or shortly afterwards. Nobody really knows what the causes of birthmarks are. Experts say that vascular birthmarks are not hereditary.
Birthmarks vary widely in colour, size and texture and can cause embarrassment for those that have them. The best way to help reduce the appearance of a birthmark is through laser treatment. A consultation is required with our doctor who will assess the area and advise how suitable you are for the treatment.
Does laser birthmark removal treatment actually work?
Yes. Laser treatment can remove most if not all the visual effects of birthmarks, port-wine stains and pigmentation, increasing people’s self-esteem as their birthmarks are reduced.
Is laser birthmark treatment safe?
Yes. Laser treatment is simple and safe. We use the latest, most advanced lasers to reduce the colour and intensity of the birthmark and to smooth the affected area. Overall, laser treatment can dramatically fade or remove birthmark stains with virtually no scarring.
Is laser birthmark removal suitable for all types of birthmarks?
The majority of benign, cosmetic birthmarks are very treatable with lasers. Some categories of birthmark may need to be assessed by a dermatologist or general/plastic surgeon for evaluation before laser treatment is considered.
How does laser birthmark removal work?
The laser light energy is finely focussed on the birthmark, passing harmlessly through the translucent top layers of the skin to heat the underlying blood vessels that are causing the birthmark. When the laser light hits the red colour of the birthmark, the light is absorbed and its energy released as heat. The heat breaks, congeals or cauterizes the small vessels under the skin, which atrophy leaving a lightened colouring.
Does laser birthmark removal hurt?
During laser birthmark reduction treatment some patients experience a slight stinging sensation in the skin. Apart from this, the treatment is painless. Some patients choose to apply a numbing cream prior to treatment. Following the treatment, the pain is minimal to non-existent.
How long does birthmark removal treatment take?
Treatment time is dependent on the size and extent of the birthmark but can range from a few minutes to an hour per session. While dramatic results may be seen in a single session, several treatments will probably be needed.
How many laser birthmark reduction treatments are required?
Pigmented birthmarks (cafe-au-lait) can normally be treated in 4-8 treatments whilst vascular birthmarks (port wine stains) may require 6-10 treatments to reduce birthmarks to an acceptable appearance.
How quickly will I see results?
The majority of the birthmarks show significant improvement following the very first treatment but several treatments will be required for optimum reduction of the birthmark.
How long does recovery take?
The treatment is non-invasive with virtually no recovery time necessary. You can resume your normal activities immediately after treatment although it is recommended that you avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours after laser birthmark treatment.
Are there any side effects?
The heat produced by a reaction to the laser light may cause a bruise and/or swelling, which generally disappears within 10-14 days.
